SpaceandPeople and POP Retail supported The Great Northern Dragon Boat Challenge, which took place at Hetton Lyons Country Park recently.

Families in the North East had a fun filled summer day out in August when The Great Northern Boat Race took place at Hetton Lyons Country Park.

Teams raced against each other in a sporting tradition which goes back more than 2,000 years. Along with boat racing, there was family-friendly entertainment which took place throughout the day.

Participants had to pull together a crew of 20 people, choose a charity to support and raise money for and race in Chinese-style dragon boats over a 250-metre course.

The annual event is organised and hosted by two of Wearside’s leading Rotary groups, SR1 and Sunderland Satellite.

President of the SR1 Group Ian Wong said that “This is a fantastic opportunity to have a great day out and watch something very different. It is also a great opportunity for anyone who wants to raise funds for their own charity to do just that.”

SpaceandPeople supported the event through a donation. Donna Urwin, POP Retail’s Retail Development Manager, also took part in the race.
